General Overview

Of all the variations of roulette in land-based and online casinos, European Roulette, also called Fair Roulette, is best suited to the preferences of most players. The reason for its enormous popularity is that it offers the player a greater chance of winning, as the banker’s advantage here is only 2.63%.

European Roulette has 37 pockets, where you can find the numbers from 1 to 36 and 0. The numbers from 1 to 36 are alternately colored in red and black, while the single zero is marked in green. The main objective, which each player tries to achieve, is to predict in which numbered pocket the ball will fall. To do so, all players place bets on a particular number, after which the croupier turns the roulette wheel in one direction and the roulette ball in the opposite direction. Once the ball falls into the pocket with the particular number, the respective winnings are paid to the players.

Basic rules of the game

When you play European Roulette online you will find that the process of placing your bet is relatively easy. The player must place his chips on the desired bet and press the ‘Turn’ button. Once the betting round is over, the player has to choose to place another bet (the ‘Rigioca’ button), or to abandon the game (the ‘Cancel’ button).

At land casinos the process of placing a bet is as follows. Four members of the casino staff are usually present at the roulette table. Two of them are known as croupiers and their main function is to manage bets and spin the ball in the roulette wheel. The other two casino employees are known as ’bout de table’ and ‘chef de partie’, who have to ensure that the game runs smoothly.

The number of participants around the roulette table is usually between 1 and 8. The roulette game starts when the croupier says ‘Faites vos jeux’. Then the players are allowed to make the types of bets that we will discuss in this article. Next, the croupier throws the ball for a spin of the roulette wheel. As soon as two rounds of the ball remain, the croupier says ‘Rien ne va plus’. From this point on, if bets are placed, they are usually ignored. Once the ball falls into one of the 37 numbered pockets, the croupier identifies and announces the winning number. Losing bets are handed over to the dealer, while all winning bets are paid out.

Types of bets

The roulette table’s betting mat has two sections – individual numbers and groups of numbers. In European Roulette players are able to take advantage of two main betting categories – internal and external bets. Internal bets are placed on a single number, adjacent numbers or small groups of numbers, while external bets cover larger groups of numbers. Most bets offer different chances of winning and different payouts respectively. These payouts and odds of winning are usually not listed on the board, except for payouts of winnings from column bets. Therefore, before entering the game, players must be interested in the payouts and odds of winning of each bet.
